Speechless.

I was in 6th grade when I was first introduced to the Holocaust. When you're 12 years old, it's hard to fully understand what took place. My 6th grade class sparked my interest to learn more about World War II and the Holocaust. During my senior year of high school, I took an entire class completely focused on the Holocaust. It was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken.

Today, I actually got to see a part of this history. I experienced touring Dachau. Learning about it in class versus actually seeing it in real life is a totally different experience. As I walked through the metal gate that read "ARBEIT MACHT FRET (Work Sets You Free)," I couldn't help but feel shivers run up my back. Walking through the camp where millions of innocent people have died was unbelievably unsettling, disturbing, and uncomfortable. Going through the crematorium was the hardest part for me. It was just one large room with multiple ovens, with a separate area filled with shower heads. As I was standing there, my heart just dropped. It is hard for me to put into words what I have felt and seen.
The whole experience was emotional, moving, and impactful. The Holocaust was a horrible event that should always be remembered in history. It was a hard tour to get through, but I think it was very important for me to see and witness it. I think everyone should visit Dachau at least once in his or her lifetime.
